What We Do
Crossroads recognizes that anyone can be a victim of sexual assault. Our services are free of charge and available to:
- Males and Females - 1 out of every 3 females and 1 out of every 5 males will become a victim of sexual offense in their lifetime.
- Children, Teens, and Adults - Sexual perpetrators do not discriminate based on age or any other category. Senior citizens as well as infants have been victims of sexual crimes.
- Primary and Secondary Victims - The actual victim (primary victim) of a sexual offense is not the only person affected by the crime. All Crossroads services are also available to friends, family members, and loved ones (all secondary victims).
In keeping with its mission of providing a comprehensive program of prevention, education, interagency coordination, and services for persons concerned with or experiencing sexual assault, Crossroads provides the following services:
Prevention and Community Education
Programs are provided to Alamance County residents and area professionals to increase knowledge and awareness of rape/sexual assault. Presentations are formatted to fit request and may include:
- Programs on communication skills, sexual assault prevention, and information about the agency's services provided to:
- Middle school students in all local public and some private schools
- High school students in selected classes
- Elon University students, organizations, and selected classes
- Information about agency services provided to:
- Civic and church groups
- Agency fairs sponsored by various community organizations
- Professional training provided to:
- Rookie police for entire region
- Seven different law enforcement agencies located in Alamance County
- Other Children's Advocacy Centers including training seminars and informal mentoring
- Elon Homes for Children
- Alamance Regional Medical Center
- Alamance Community College including nursing program and continuing education for teachers
- residents, students, and area professionals interested in becoming either a crisis line or community education volunteer
Crossroads also maintains a library of resources including a large selection of books, videos, and other informational materials available for the public to borrow. There are resources for all ages on a wide range of topics.
Interagency Coordination
- All professionals who respond to child sexual abuse meet weekly at the Crossroads office to discuss current cases; this review team is coordinated by Crossroads staff and includes representatives from the following areas: District Attorney's office, Department of Social Services, Mental Health, law enforcement agencies, Guardian ad Litem, and Alamance Regional Medical Center.
- Quarterly training is provided for the above professionals.
- The Sexual Assault Response Team, coordinated by Crossroads, meets weekly to discuss cases of adult sexual assault. This team consists of representatives from the District Attorney's office, law enforcement agencies, and Alamance Regional Medical Center.
- Training is provided for Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners.
Services to persons concerned with or experiencing sexual assault
- Crisis Intervention for Adults
- 24-HOUR CRISIS LINE (336) 228-0360 - free, confidential support and information over the phone. Trained volunteers staff the crisis line and are available to assist victims of sexual assault and their families and friends .
- Companion services - Volunteers are available to accompany the victim to the hospital, law enforcement agencies, and the District Attorney's office.
- Advocacy - Trained Victim Advocates are available to help victims and their friends and families through the legal system by providing liaison services between the client and the District Attorney's office, court preparation, accompaniment to appointments and court, and education about the judicial system. The Victim Advocates also act as support persons and are available to provide crisis counseling.

All services are free and confidential
You are not required to reveal any names; however, if you call CrossRoads and reveal the first and last names of a child under 16 and report suspected abuse of this child, we are obligated by law to report it. The law requires anyone who suspects child abuse to report that suspicion to the Department of Social Services. This is the one exception to our commitment to confidentiality.
